The Role of Naloxone in the Community
Course Description
This course is applicable for all health care professionals and substance use treatment professionals. The course reviews recent guidelines on the administration of naloxone to prevent opioid overdose, including background on opioid overdose trends and epidemiology. The course also includes a video from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on the use and distribution of naloxone kits for community members. This presentation makes reference to guidelines, policies, and materials of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS).
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the epidemiology of opioid overdose
- Advise their patients on how to avoid, recognize and act on opioid overdoses
- Discuss the role and safety of prescribing and distributing naloxone in the community
- Understand the NYS requirements to become an Opioid Overdose Prevention Program
